Having visited over 30 counties, some of which I traveled to several times, I know a thing or two about what can be helpful on a flight. I realize we are not being exactly environmentally friendly by getting on a plane which releases CO2 emissions and has other negative consequences on the environment. Still, if we’re going to travel, and need certain products to bring with us, we can make some Earth friendly choices. I have compiled a list of some eco-conscious in-flight travel essentials to help you make better choices where you can.
1. Organic Cotton Travel Scarf

This Zestt Dreamsoft travel scarf is made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, free of pesticides and toxic chemicals. It is better for cotton farmers and better for you as it keeps unwanted pesticides and chemicals from being absorbed through your skin. A good travel scarf is one of my top travel tips because it is multi-use, can be styled in different ways to add a variety of outfit options, can be worn on the plane to save room in your luggage and can be used as a blanket to keep you warm on perpetually cold flights. I have even rolled up my scarf to create a pillow before, making it very useful on a plane.
2. Bamboo Face Sheet Mask

If you’re like me and like to combat the dehydration from flying by wearing a face mask in-flight, this one by Rael Beauty is a good choice. There are four different types for different skin needs and they come in a pack of 5 individually wrapped masks. They are vegan and cruelty free with no animal derived ingredients and no animal testing. They are made of bamboo with clean ingredients and are free of synthetic fragrances, artificial dyes, parabens, PEGs, phenoxyethanol, mineral oil, silicones, sulfates, and phthalates.
3. Dissolving Sheet Mask

This is another great eco-conscious face mask made by Conserving Beauty. It is a mask that dissolves in water after use and has a compostable sachet making it zero waste. It is vegan, palm-oil free and made ethically. The company is based out of Australia, so there will be a footprint from shipping overseas. I’m working on getting a coupon code for you all, check back soon.
4. Wheat Straw Foldable Hair Comb

This foldable hair comb by Kootinn is two combs in one, making it multi-use and perfect to pack for travel. It is crafted from high-quality wheat straw plant fiber composite material which is biodegradable. This makes it a great environmentally friendly choice for tidying up your locks on the plane. It is also very affordable and comes in a four pack, perfect for gifting.
5. Plastic-free Lip Balm

A good lip balm is perhaps the most important thing for me on a flight. The humidity level of an airplane cabin is around 10-20 percent, much lower than the 35-65 percent humidity of normal everyday environments, leaving our skin and lips feeling dry and dehydrated. Attitude is a brand I love because many of their products are plastic free, including their lip balm. Their line of products are EWG verified, meaning they are free of harmful ingredients. They are also ECOLOGO certified indicating that their products have undergone rigorous scientific testing and/or exhaustive auditing to comply with stringent, third-party environmental performance standards. In addition, they are certified by PETA to be vegan and cruelty-free. The Attitude lip balm comes in coconut, mint, watermelon or unscented. 6. Plastic-free Solid Face Cream

Another one of my favorite products by Attitude is their Oceanly solid face cream stick. My top travel hack is to get a solid version of anything liquid for your carry-on and in-flight kit. I often travel with a carry-on only so I have converted pretty much everything into solid form: shampoo, toothpaste, lotion, face wash, eye cream. This is helpful because one, TSA won’t count them towards your liquid allowance and two, you won’t waste room and weight on the water inside your products. You’ll get more active ingredients in less space, making it great for travel. The packaging for this face cream is biodegradable paper, so it is zero waste. The Attitude Oceanly Face Cream Stick comes in 0.3 ounce or 1 ounce sizes, both of which are small and convenient for travel. There are four types to choose from depending on your skin concerns: phyto-age, phyto-calm, phyto-glow or phyto-matte. You can purchase Attitude products on Amazon or on their website using my affiliate link for 15% off.
For another plastic-free face moisturizer option, I like the Ethique Quench Lightweight Solid Face Moisturizer Tube. This company is also environmentally conscious with their products being palm oil free, cruelty-free, vegan, made from fair-trade, ethically sourced cocoa butter and coconut oil. Their packaging is compostable and they are climate positive. They also donate 2% of sales to charity.
7. Bamboo Neck Gaiter

I love multiple use items, especially when trying to pack light, and a buff or neck gaiter can be used in many different ways. I use mine on flights as an eye mask or face mask most commonly, but it can also be worn in the hair to keep it back or tie it or around the neck to keep you warm. The Purian bamboo neck gaiter is great because bamboo is an environmentally friendly material. It grows rapidly and on its own when you cut down a stalk making it renewable and sustainable. It consumes less water than other plant fibers like cotton. It absorbs more CO2 and releases more oxygen than plants and trees. Additionally, bamboo is biodegradable and compostable. This neck gaiter is hypoallergenic, breathable, anti-order, has UV and dust protection.
8. Bamboo Compression Socks

I always wear compression socks on flights or else my feet and legs will swell up and I will feel uncomfortable. I like to hit the ground running once I land, so compression socks are a non-negotiable in-flight essential for me. This pair by Sonoran is made of 80% viscose from bamboo which is renewable, breathable, soft, has natural bactericidal properties, and is 3-4 times more moisture absorbing than cotton. It is OEKO-TEX 100 certified meaning it has passed safety tests for the presence of harmful substances. In addition to wearing the socks on my flight, I like to help my blood circulation by putting my feet up a wall once I get to my accommodation.
9. Reusable Make-up Wipe

If you’re wearing make-up or just want a really clean face on a flight, I swear by MakeUp Eraser. It is more sustainable than one time use disposable make-up removing wipes because it is washable and reusable plus this one is made of 100% recycled polyester. You just add a little bit of water and use one side to clean and the other side for exfoliating. It comes in full size, mini, and 7 day set. I keep a mini in my in-flight travel bag.
10. Plastic-free Mini Deodorant

On a long flight I definitely need a deodorant refresh and this mini deodorant by Wild is perfect to bring on the plane. It comes in a three pack of their best selling scents which is great because I like to keep one in my purse and another in my car for emergency smelly situations. Wild uses all natural ingredients that are vegan and cruelty-free, free from artificial fragrances, chemicals, aluminum, parabens or sulfates. The packaging for their mini three pack is plastic-free and compostable with their cardboard packaging being certified by the FSC. Wild is a carbon negative business that offsets 1.5 times their emissions by planting trees through ON A MISSION and a certified B corporation so you can feel good about purchasing from them.
11. Plastic-free Solid Body Butter Stick

Since flights are so dehydrating, I like to moisturize my skin everywhere. A good body butter will do wonders for dry hands, arms and legs. This one by Attitude is my go-to as it’s hands free and easy to use. If you’ve read about their other products that I recommend, you know why I love this brand so much. The packaging for their body butter stick is plastic-free, 100% biodegradable thick and FSC cardboard from eco-managed forests with vegetable ink. It is made with clean vegan ingredients and is EWG verified which means it contains no ingredients of concern according to EWG’s strict standards. It is available in sea salt or sandalwood scents. 12. Plastic-free Solid Eye Cream Stick

Continuing our hydrating the skin during flights thread, I love this eye cream, again by Attitude. If you can’t sleep on flights, this eye cream will make it look like you slept the entire time. They offer three types to cater to your needs: phyto-age, phyto-calm or phyto-glow. This eye creams boasts the same eco-conscious features as the other Attitude products I discussed previously, so you can rest assured that this purchase is good for the planet. 13. Bamboo All Purpose Cleaning Wipes

These antibacterial all purpose wipes by Eco Soul are hypoallergenic and safe on skin and all surfaces, making them perfect for staying clean and healthy on flights. They are made from fastest replenishing bamboo which are plastic-free, timber-free and toxin-free. In addition, they are unscented, alcohol-free, BPA-free, paraben-free and have recyclable packaging so very safe for the eco-conscious traveler.
14. Toothpaste Tablets

If you’re like me and need to brush your teeth at some point during a flight, the Duo toothpaste tablets are a good environmentally friendly toothpaste option. I used to bring whisps on flights, but I don’t like using single use plastic so I stopped buying them. They come in several flavors with different vitamins and functions: original, energy, immunity and sleep. I recommend the sleep version with melatonin and L-theanine for flights to help you catch some Z’s and fight jet lag. This solid version of toothpaste will not count against your liquid allowance on flights, so they are great for travel. Duo is free from SLS detergents, parabens, dyes, fillers, fluoride, chemicals, and plastic packaging. It is made in the USA with dentist-formulated clean vegan and effective ingredients.
15. Biodegradable Disposable Toothbrush

The Nuduko 4 in 1 travel toothbrush is ideal to go along with the toothpaste tablets. They are individually packaged so you can throw a few in your travel bag and other places you may need one. It has a toothbrush, tongue scraper, dental floss and toothpick, making it great for many on-the-go needs. It is made from wheat straw so it is biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
16. Eco Stain Remover Pen

If you’re caught in some turbulence, your in flight meal could end up on your shirt, so it’s a good idea to keep a stain remover pen with you on a flight. This one by GoodBasics has no harsh chemicals, is safe for all materials and is earth friendly. It is made of bacteria, enzymes and natural surfactants that seep deep into your fabric to remove stains from the core without harmful ingredients. It is fragrance-free so won’t create strong scents on your flight.
17. Bamboo Face Wipes

The Ursa Major essential face wipes are individually wrapped biodegradable bamboo wipes infused with clean and healthy ingredients. They are paraben-free, fragrance-free, cruelty-free and vegan. There are no petrochemicals, sulfates, synthetic fragrance or color, glycols, silicones or PEGs. Ursa Major is a certified B corp meaning that they meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact. They are also plastic negative because they remove two plastic bottles from nature for every bottle they use. I like that they are individually wrapped because I can throw a few in my in-flight pouch, making them great for travel.
